Computer Course Descriptions

1.  Computers for Seniors  I - The Basic Program (This is a 4 week program)

Week 1 - Computer Essentials -  (1 hour)
Right out of the box basics.  Learn how to start the computer and use the mouse and keyboard to become familiar with its operation.  Learn how to shut down the computer properly and learn about the standard functions found on most computers.  You can become more comfortable with the computer once you have these basics to get started.

Week 2 - Email Essentials - (1 hour)
Electronic mail is the easy way to communicate with friends and family at a distance.  You'll learn how to set up your email to send and receive messages.  You will also learn some of the important information about email attachments and etiquette.

Week 3 - Internet Essentials - (1 hour)
The Internet has volumes of information for everyone.  This seminar will familiarize you with the basics of how to find the information you want on the Internet easily and quickly.  As well, you will learn where to find learning opportunities on the Internet. 

Week 4 - "Hands On" Computer Training Session - (2 hours)
During this session the students would use the skills learned during the "Email Essentials" and the "Internet Essentials" sessions.
Email: The student will set up an email account and then test it. 
Internet:  The student will learn various searching techniques and then search for various websites of interest to students as requested during this session.

2.  Computers for Seniors II - The Next Steps (This is a 4 week program)
(Prerequisite: Computers for Seniors I: The basic program or familiarity with email, using Google search engine, as well as email access and use.)

Week 1 - Getting Social on the Internet -  (1 hour)
Building on the skills learned from Computers for Seniors I, you will learn what social media is, what ways can be used to communicate with others and how to access various websites such as Facebook, Twitter, pinterest, and Google+.

Week 2 - Using Skype to Talk  -  (1 hour)
Skype is another way to communicate with friends and family at a distance.  You will learn how to set up your Skype account to make free long distance calls to friends and family living elsewhere.  

Week 3 - Entertain Us -  (1 hour)
The internet has volumes of media for everyone.  This session will familiarize you with the basics of how to find reputable entertainment and media on the Internet.  We will focus on sites such as YouTube, MySpace and Facebook and will discuss the legal issues of access, downloading and sharing of media.

Week 4 - Smile for the Camera - (1 hour)
Almost everyone has a digital device for taking pictures whether it's a cell phone, smart phone, camera or tablet.The question is, "How can I get those pictures on my computer and what can I do with them?"  This session will examine the basics of taking pictures from camera to computer and we will look at some simple editing programs to enhance your images.  We will also look at sites to make your pictures available to family and friends.

3.  iPad - Out of the Box (2 - 1 hour sessions - minimum 8 students)

A new piece of technology needs to be set-up properly so that you are able to efficiently use it.  This session requires learners to bring their iPad to class and we will go through the steps to register your product, set-up email and navigate the basics on the iPad.

4.  iPad - Getting Friendly (2 -1 hour sessions - minimum 8 students)

Once you've registered, set-up email and been using your iPad, you are ready to move forward and learn ways to maximize battery life, troubleshoot basic issues, and interact more with family and friends.
This course requires participants to bring their iPad tablet.

5. Samsung Tablets - Using (2 - 1 hour sessions - minimum 8 students)

Once you've registered, set-up email and been using your Samsung, you are ready to move forward and learn ways to maximize battery life, troubleshoot basic issues, and interact more with friends and family.
This course requires participants to bring their Samsung tablet.

6.  Files & Folders 4 Fun (1 - 1 hour session - minimum 8 students)

learn how to get all of your digital files, pictures, music and movies organized on your computer.  Remember where these things are and how to find them.

7. Planning a Website (This is a 2 week program)
"Measure once, cut twice" is a good description of this 2 hour class where you will learn the steps to plan for a website, even if you don't know any programming!!  Everything is possible with a good plan

Week 1 - Shopping Online featuring eBay (2 hours)
Online shopping is becoming more popular each year.  This 2 hour class will take you through the basics needed to ensure safe shopping as well as tips to use eBay to find virtual stores and compare products and pricing.

Week 2 - Using a Website for Your Business (2 hours)
Business professionals can learn how a website fits into a well rounded marketing plan, improving customer contact and your company's bottom line.  You will also learn key questions to ask when looking for a professional website designer.
